ASL and Deaf Culture Study

Posted on May 26, 2020 by Audrey_Patterson Leave a Comment on ASL and Deaf Culture Study

Project Summary

My project started due to one little boy I met this summer. One deaf little boy who just was trying to communicate with all the other kids at camp. Because of his experience that I witnessed this summer, I decided to dedicate my time and March Madness project to learning as much ASL as I possibly could in the time given. Throughout the year I have been taking classes at the Sign Language Center and have completed levels 1 and 2. Through learning ASL, I became interested in the culture of deafness and the deaf community, specifically deaf education. I was able to reach out to teachers at deaf schools and ask all the questions I had collected throughout my ASL study. Over the course of the year, through learning ASL and interacting with members of the community, my love for ASL and the beauty of it has grown.

Additional Information

After completing this project, I continued to study ASL and moved on to level 3. Now in quarantine I am taking online classes. Also, this summer, I would like to teach others basics of ASL. Several friends of mine have shown interest in it and asked for me to teach them and I am excited to get more people involved in ASL and informed about the deaf community.
