Better Public Housing

Posted on May 26, 2020 by Leo Margolies 2 Comments on Better Public Housing

Project Summary

For my March Madness project, I decided to improve upon the current New York City public housing building. This was a daunting task and I decided to start with three main goals. Make the building energy-efficient and eco-friendly, make the apartments easily constructible, and make the overall building beautiful. These goals led me to learn how to use 3D modeling software, drawing tools, laser cutter, and a swath of 3D printing techniques. All of these technologies helped me to not only design my building, but create a scale model made out of laser-cut acrylic, and 3D printed pieces.

    Dear Leo,
What an important project! I did not know that 1 in 5 NYC residents live in public housing. I especially like how you designed green space for residents within a densely populated building. The building has a brightness and optimism. I was impressed with how you needed to learn new technologies and embraced the challenge. Well done LEO—budding architect!

Leo, how clever to take an empty, city-owned warehouse and convert it to affordable housing. The apt designs are beautifully thought out and it is clear that you were looking to improve the quality of life for residents in public housing. This is very impressive work. You should submit your proposal and photos to NYCHA. Even though the overall budget was more than they wanted to spend, the design and thought that went into the overall project might give them some ideas on how to improve future NYCHA housing efforts. Bravo!
