Project Summary
Since my mom’s side of the family originates from Greece, I have been exposed to the interesting Greek culture throughout my whole life. Many members of my family speak the language, however, I was never forced to learn Greek growing up. As I have had the opportunity to travel to Greece in the summers, my interest for learning Greek along with learning about the history of my heritage has developed. I have always loved learning about my family’s history, but in Fifth Grade, when our class began learning about Ancient Greece, is when my interest ignited. I was amused at the fact that my ancestry contained so much history and importance. A year-long project like March Madness gave me the perfect opportunity to begin learning the language and further explore the Greek culture. Learning Greek was a challenge, but I have developed an understanding of how to read, write, and speak the basics. I believe learning the language of my heritage has connected me more to the culture and the people of Greece. I have become more enlightened as a person and a student, and I hope to continue practicing Greek as it will be useful to me in the future.
