For my March Madness, I decided my life long passion of playing many instruments with a voyage into the uncharted waters of recording and mixing. I attempted to answer the question how do I create instrumental music that conveys emotions and how do I capture that feeling. What choices do I make in the mixing process to exemplify what I might be attempting to convey? With these questions in mind I embarked on a journey of which I spent the first three month composing instrumental music with predetermined titles so thatI would have some framework to consider when creating them. Then I arranged each piece for different instruments and practiced diligently. After that I set up my microphones, acoustic treatment and mixing board and began recording. My goal in creating this body of work is to learn more about the recording process but also to document my progression as a musician. While I will be making the tracks available for public consumption, I will continue to work on them and hopefully in the future be able to re-record some of them with live musicians. While I can play many instruments at proficient level, I feel as though the spotaninty and the collaborative environment that is a key element to many of my favorite records is an essence that I wish to capture going forward. The process of writing arranging recording, producing mixing and mastering an album completely independently of anyone else has been an interesting process. In some ways, I think I have grown musically and have gained many new skills. At the same, the project has not been without its challenges whether that was equipment failures or the general problems that a brash diyist runs into when trying to do everything themselves from a ten foot by eight foot bedroom in an apartment building. This project is a declaration of musical independence and affirmation of human’s ability to make the best of their situations so I hope y’all enjoy the product of Solitude Entertainment.
