Swinging Ny-1

Project Summary

I had a lot of trouble finding the right challenge to tackle for the March Madness project. My original March Madness project was to tutor kids in public school. Unfortunately because of COVID, that project had to be done virtually. The tutoring organization had some difficulties placing me with a student so I was forced to look at my other interests. I thought about what I enjoyed doing and what would make a good project. That train of thought led me to politics. Every morning for as long as I can remember my mom plays NPR so loud that one could mistake it for a rock concert. This daily dose infused me with political discourse which in turn flowered into a deep addiction to reading the news. I then thought about what I could do that was related to politics and could be done virtually. I had to think about what constituted a unique project and how I could judge it successful.  For me, that meant that the end result had to have the real possibility of being impactful on a political landscape.

There had been a lot of discussion in my house about the idea that candidate Delgado had won in District 19 as a result of voters who had changed their registrations from NYC to their second homes upstate. I decided to research other potential swing districts in New York State. My research led me to NY-1 and the massive potential for change that lay within its boundaries. By making this website, I hope to clarify for voters their right to vote and their opportunity to change history in this district. When I first decided this was what I wanted to do I spent a lot of time researching the numbers surrounding the district. It was a long process in which I had to comb through unintuitive government websites and local newspapers. I then had to research how to create a website. For this, I talked to my cousin Harry, who is a coder by trade. He helped me understand what website builder I should use. He also told me that creating a website would not be enough as it would be akin to a tree falling in the forest for nobody to hear it. To address this risk,  I used Wix and its built-in advertising features. This enabled me to spread the word about my website and help serve its purpose more effectively. Finally, I secured the domain https://www.registertovoteinny-1.com/ and published my website.
